Caterpillar's Record Backlog Fuels AI Push and Earnings Growth
Caterpillar's recent announcement of a record US$72 billion backlog has investors reevaluating their expectations for the company. The significant demand across construction, resource industries, and especially data center power is driven by a combination of factors, including a strong economy and growing need for efficient solutions.
The partnership with FieldAI on physical AI and autonomous robotics using NVIDIA technologies and digital twins points to a meaningful push into higher-tech, efficiency-focused solutions. This collaboration aims to squeeze more uptime, safety, and throughput from existing fleets rather than just relying on new unit sales.
Analysts are expecting revenues of US$94.5 billion and earnings of US$17.4 billion by 2029, which implies forecast revenue growth of 10.1% per year and an earnings increase of about US$8 billion from US$9.4 billion today. Caterpillar's forecasts point to a fair value of $970.37 versus the current share price of $805.00, indicating a potential upside of 21%.
However, some analysts focus on tariff risk instead of AI upside, penciling in about US$97.2 billion of revenue and US$14.7 billion of earnings by 2029. This view pre-dates the Caterpillar and FieldAI collaboration, highlighting the importance of considering multiple perspectives when evaluating investment opportunities.
