Cathay Pacific, Google Expand AI-Powered Flight Trials
Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific and tech giant Google are expanding their AI-powered flight trials, which aim to reduce aviation's climate impact in the Asia-Pacific region.
The technology uses predictive AI to steer aircraft away from contrail-forming zones, where condensation trails trap atmospheric heat and account for roughly one-third of aviation's total climate impact, according to Kemal Armada, product manager for climate and AI at Google.
Cathay Pacific became the first commercial airline in the Asia-Pacific region to test this technology in live operations, specifically on ultra-long-haul routes. The second phase of trials will partner with non-governmental organisation Contrails.org and conduct a randomised controlled trial on these same routes.
Google's product manager for climate and AI, Kemal Armada, stated that the expanded partnership will allow them to do 'a much larger trial' involving ultra-long-haul flights. Michael Yue, managing director and general manager at Google Hong Kong, highlighted the opportunity to find cost-effective ways to mitigate the impact of contrails.
The trials are seen as a step towards sustainability in the aviation industry, with potential far-reaching implications for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
