Cathay Pacific Tests AI Tool to Cut Aviation Emissions

Cathay Pacific has begun testing Google's AI tool to reduce planet-warming contrails. The Hong Kong airline is the first in Asia to use this technology, which reroutes aircraft to avoid atmospheric conditions that form contrails.

Contrails are created when hot water vapor from jet engines hits freezing air at high altitude, trapping heat and contributing to global warming. Google's tool has shown promise in early trials with Cathay Pacific, reducing the warming impact of contrails by about 40% through small adjustments to flight altitude.

Google staff Kemal Armada and Max Vogler stated that 'Contrail mitigation remains one of the most immediately available, scalable, and cost-effective ways to reduce aviation's climate footprint...'
