CAT's Strong Fundamentals Outweigh Declining ROIC
Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) has maintained pace with the overall market, increasing by 11.6% over the last six months, matching the S&P 500's return of 11.7%. The heavy machinery manufacturer has been a topic of debate among investors, but two key factors suggest its long-term prospects are strong.
Firstly, Caterpillar's revenue growth over the past five years has been impressive, with an annualized increase of 10.2%, outperforming the average industrials company. This indicates that its offerings resonate well with customers and have a high demand in the market.
Secondly, the company's free cash flow margin has expanded significantly over the same period, rising by 6.6 percentage points. Its free cash flow margin for the trailing 12 months was 14.2%, demonstrating that it has become a less capital-intensive business and its financials are improving.
However, there is one reason to be cautious: Caterpillar's return on invested capital (ROIC) has declined over the last few years. This trend may indicate that new investments have not yet borne fruit and could potentially reverse if they do not improve in the future.
