Chapek Stands Firm on Price Hikes Amid Sabotage Allegations
Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek is standing by his decision to raise prices at Disney amusement parks, including introducing dynamic pricing and charging for previously free perks. In his upcoming memoir 'Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth', Chapek writes that he implemented these measures to boost revenue.
Under his tenure as chairman of Disney's theme park division, Chapek increased prices for Disney+, from $7.99 to $10.99 a month, and ESPN, which jumped up from $6.99 to $9.99 a month. He also discontinued the complimentary airport shuttle service and charged guests for parking at Disney hotels in Florida.
Chapek blames his firing on a 'relentless' sabotage campaign allegedly carried out by Bob Iger, who replaced him as CEO in 2022. Chapek writes that he was unfairly dismissed and that Iger undermined him throughout his tenure.
