Chase Bank's Modernist Branch Faces Demolition Despite Landmark Consideration

JPMorgan Chase & Co wants to demolish its modernist bank branch in Evanston, Illinois. The 47-year-old building was designed by late architect David Haid and features a unique blend of minimalist and glassy design elements.

Evanston's Historic Preservation Commission considers the structure valuable enough to be landmarked, but Chase objects, calling it 'utilitarian' and unworthy of landmark status.

JPMorgan Chase Vice President Jonathan Krissoff stated that Haid did not push the boundaries or advance the profession like some other modernist architects. However, architectural historian Susan S. Benjamin disagrees, saying Haid's work is 'really special' and a testament to his minimalist style.
