Chevron Abandons California Carbon Capture Project
Chevron has pulled out of its massive carbon capture project in California's Kern County.
The oil giant had partnered with the US Department of Energy for the Western Regional Direct Air Capture Hub project, but withdrew from it in July 2025.
According to Chevron's spokeswoman Chanel Jolly, the company decided to terminate its involvement after discussions with the Department of Energy.
The Eastridge CCS project aimed to capture up to 300,000 metric tons of CO2 per year and store it underground. Chevron had planned to develop infrastructure to capture carbon dioxide from an oilfield power plant in Kern County and permanently trap it deep underground.
Local experts believed the project had the potential to transform the region's economy as Kern's geological formations have great capacity for storing carbon dioxide.
