Chevron Corporation (CVX) and ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation (XOM) are drawing investor interest as their stock prices near 52-week highs. CVX is trading at $226.68, close to its peak of $229.04, while XOM is at $178.23, just below its high of $180.31. The surge in crude prices, with Brent crude exceeding $110 per barrel, has fueled these gains. Both companies benefit from oil and gas production, refining, and disciplined capital allocation, but investors must assess whether operational improvements justify further optimism.
Chevron stands out due to its expanded upstream portfolio following the Hess acquisition. Its second-quarter 2026 production reached 4.07 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, a 20% year-over-year increase. The company expects full-year output between 3.98 million and 4.10 million barrels. Chevron's cost discipline has led to $1.5 billion in annualized Hess-related synergies and $3 billion in structural savings since 2024. The company also generated $22.6 billion in operating cash flow and $18.1 billion in free cash flow during the second quarter, while reducing debt by $8.4 billion. Chevron's financial flexibility supports its investment appeal, with a quarterly dividend of $1.78 per share and continued share repurchases.
ExxonMobil offers greater operating scale and a diversified portfolio spanning upstream production, fuels, chemicals, and specialty products. Its second-quarter output totaled 4.51 million oil-equivalent barrels daily, despite Middle East disruptions. ExxonMobil's integrated operations provide value beyond crude production, with record diesel production and strong chemical margins. The company generated $23.6 billion in operating cash flow and $17.2 billion in free cash flow during the second quarter, alongside $14.7 billion in adjusted earnings. Shareholder distributions totaled $9.4 billion, split between dividends and repurchases.
From a valuation perspective, ExxonMobil trades at a forward price-to-sales ratio of 1.8X, compared to Chevron's 1.89X. Chevron's earnings are projected to rise 148.6% in 2026, while ExxonMobil's earnings are expected to increase by 95%. Both companies offer compelling investment opportunities, but Chevron's stronger earnings growth prospects make it the more attractive choice.
