Chevron Balances Permian Pledge with Venezuela Expansion
Chevron is navigating a complex situation as it balances its position in the Permian Basin with its operations in Venezuela. On one side, the company has made a long-term commitment to maintain production above 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day through 2040, despite market uncertainty and potential diplomatic developments between Washington and Tehran.
Meanwhile, Chevron's Venezuelan operation faces a challenge from NABEP, which is positioning itself to overtake Chevron as the largest private oil producer in Venezuela. NABEP targets 500,000 barrels per day by the end of 2028 and has secured funding from the US government, although its stake in NABEP remains uncertain under Venezuelan law.
Chevron's own expansion plans in Venezuela envision $7 billion in gross investment over five years, with a goal to double output to 600,000 barrels per day. The company is leveraging established joint ventures and improved contract terms to unlock commercial reserves.
