Chevron Bolsters Venezuelan Presence with Orinoco Belt Expansion
Chevron has expanded its Venezuelan operations through updated joint venture agreements that add new acreage and revised terms for existing ventures. The company's presence in Venezuela dates back over a century, with its activities centered on several joint ventures, including Petroindependencia, Petropiar, and Petroboscan. The latest agreements cover additional areas within the Orinoco Oil Belt, where Chevron has a 49% interest through its subsidiary.
The revised framework changes fiscal, commercial, and legal arrangements for the three joint ventures, recognizing conversion arrangements under Venezuela's amended hydrocarbons framework. This is significant for heavy-oil developments, as it affects how projects can be developed in terms of commercial structures, operating permissions, and access to infrastructure.
Chevron's Venezuelan operations are expected to direct over $7 billion towards the country over the next five years, with a production objective of approximately 600,000 barrels per day. This represents more than twice the level associated with the company's current year production in Venezuela.
