Chevron CEO Warns of Ongoing Attacks in Strait of Hormuz
Chevron Corp. CEO Mike Wirth highlighted ongoing security risks in the Strait of Hormuz, noting that several vessels have been attacked in recent days. Speaking on Bloomberg TV, Wirth described the incidents as a reminder of the persistent dangers in the region, regardless of any potential peace agreements.
Wirth confirmed that while some attacks have been reported, others have not. He stated, "There have been vessels that have been in transit that have suffered attacks. They’re maybe not every day, but there have been multiple incidents that have occurred."
Chevron currently has six vessels chartered in the Persian Gulf, but Wirth emphasized that the decision to navigate the strait rests with the ship owners. The company would not consider paying a toll for safe passage, leaving the choice to the ship operators and their insurers.
The situation underscores the challenges of resuming normal trade in the region. Wirth noted that ship owners will need to feel secure enough to return vessels to the strait, especially after months of disruptions and trapped crews.
