Chevron CFO Eimear Bonner takes on key operating role
Chevron has announced a major leadership shift, moving its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Eimear Bonner into a key operating role. Effective January 1, Bonner will become president of oil, products, and gas, overseeing the company’s core business. Jeff Gustavson, currently president of new energies, will take over as CFO. Bonner’s career at Chevron spans over two decades, starting as an offshore petroleum engineer in the UK. She has held various engineering, operating, and strategy positions, including serving as the company’s first female chief technology officer before transitioning to CFO in 2024.
The new role places Bonner at the helm of Chevron’s operational challenges, including safe and reliable operations, capital allocation, and value-chain optimization. Chevron has not confirmed whether this move is part of a broader CEO succession plan, but industry experts view Bonner’s diverse background as a strong foundation for future leadership. Scott W. Simmons of Crist Kolder Associates described her career progression as a “perfect script” for CEO development, highlighting her experience in both technology and finance.
The leadership change comes at a pivotal time for Chevron, which reported $12.1 billion in earnings and a 21% return on capital employed in the second quarter. The company is focusing on higher returns and greater free cash flow through 2030, supported by volume growth and operational improvements. Bonner’s deep understanding of the business, gained from her various roles, will be crucial in navigating these strategic priorities.
