Chevron Commits Over $10 Billion to Nigerian Content and Capacity Development
Chevron Nigeria Limited has announced that it invests over $1 billion annually in local content and has contributed more than $10 billion over the past decade to support local communities, Nigerian companies, and capacity building.
At a workshop on 'Enhancing Professional Skills and Ethical Standards in Oil and Gas Journalism' organized by Chevron in partnership with the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), General Manager Corporate Affairs Olusoga Oduselu revealed that Chevron's mission is based on partnership and performance, starting with people.
According to Oduselu, Chevron has spent over $10 billion on Nigerian content and local capacity development, supporting contractors and communities across the country through its Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) initiative.
The GMoU programme was initiated in 2005 as a response to escalating crises in the Niger Delta around 2010. It fosters participatory partnerships that give communities ownership of development projects and the power to determine their needs, water, electricity, and education, and manage their five-year development plans.
Chevron provides funding and monitors progress through Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Before the enactment of Nigeria's Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), millions of dollars had been invested in Niger Delta communities through GMoU projects. The PIA adopted many of the principles from Chevron's model, including transparency, accountability, sustainability, participation, and capacity building.
