Chevron Doubles Down on Venezuelan Oil Expansion
Chevron is expanding its operations in Venezuela, marking a significant development in the country's oil industry. The move comes just days after the US and Venezuela announced a deal to give the US access to 65 billion barrels of oil.
The expansion will take place in the Orinoco Belt, where much of Venezuela's oil reserves lie. Chevron plans to invest over $7 billion over the next five years, which will expand its production to approximately 600,000 barrels of oil per day.
US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright hailed the deal as a transformative moment for energy production worldwide. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth described it as an important milestone for his company and its partners in Venezuela.
However, experts warn that restoring Venezuela's oil production to its former levels will be a challenging task. Rystad Energy analysts estimate it would take more than a decade and $183 billion to restore production to 3 million barrels per day.
