Chevron Expands Digital Subsurface Collaboration with SLB and TotalEnergies
Chevron has joined SLB and TotalEnergies in a digital subsurface collaboration called Arena. Launched in 2024, Arena aims to co-develop technologies for reservoir engineering and geoscience. Chevron becomes the second global operator in the initiative, contributing investment, intellectual property, and technical expertise. The company will focus on uncertainty analysis, optimization, and field development planning to enhance digital subsurface technologies.
The collaboration seeks to improve decision-making in reservoir engineering and geoscience workflows as operators manage complex reservoirs and vast amounts of subsurface data. Rakesh Jaggi, president of SLB’s digital business, highlighted the value of combining SLB’s expertise with operator knowledge to address subsurface workflows and field development decisions.
Subject matter experts from Chevron and TotalEnergies will work within SLB technology centers, integrating operator experience directly into technology development. This approach aims to shorten feedback loops between product development teams and operators. Jitendra Kikani, Chevron vice president of Subsurface, emphasized the goal of advancing digital capabilities to unlock greater value from subsurface resources.
Arena builds on previous collaborations between Chevron, TotalEnergies, and SLB, including the Intersect reservoir simulator. The focus now is on developing open, scalable, and extensible digital subsurface technologies.
