Chevron Expands Presence in Southern Iraq Oil Projects
US-based oil and gas giant Chevron is expanding its presence in southern Iraq's oil projects. The company has signed agreements for two major oilfields, West Qurna (Phase 2) and Nasiriyah, with state-run companies. This marks a significant shift from Chevron's previous focus on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
Chevron withdrew entirely from the KRI in 2025, stating it had 'completed exit agreements.' The company has now turned its attention to southern Iraq, where it will share its expertise in developing oil and gas projects. This move is seen as a key step in furthering Iraq's energy resources.
Chevron is also involved in a proposed cross-border pipeline project that would carry Iraqi crude across Syria to the Mediterranean. The governments of Iraq and Syria have signed a Heads of Agreement with Chevron, among other companies, for this potential pipeline project.
