Chevron Faces Pressure from Cyprus on Aphrodite Gas Field Development
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has urged Chevron to accelerate development of the Aphrodite gas field, pushing for a final investment decision to begin natural gas production. The two parties reaffirmed their joint determination to advance the project's progress.
According to government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the discussions between Christodoulides and Javier la Rosa, chairman of Chevron’s Base Assets and Emerging Countries division, covered technical and commercial operations, as well as measures needed to reach a final investment decision. The Cypriot president emphasized the need to preserve current progress and expedite timelines.
The Aphrodite gas field is strategically critical for Cyprus, and the country is working on an approved development and production plan already in place. Letymbiotis noted that successful development of Aphrodite would represent a significant milestone for Cyprus while reinforcing the eastern Mediterranean’s position within European energy planning and security frameworks.
