Chevron Invests $88 Million in Egyptian Offshore Exploration
Chevron has inked an $88 million deal with Egypt to explore for natural gas and crude oil in the offshore Lotus area of the Mediterranean Sea. The agreement, signed between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Chevron, includes drilling two exploration wells and reprocessing 3D seismic data. The Lotus area, located around 200 kilometers from Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, presents untapped potential in water depths ranging from 2,000 to 2,800 meters.
Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi emphasized that expanding Egypt’s exploration map is a key strategy to boost domestic oil and gas production. The government continues to attract international investment by settling outstanding payments to energy partners and offering new areas for exploration. Chevron is already active in several offshore areas, including the promising Nargis gas discovery and the Veleox well in the North Cleopatra area.
The agreement reflects Chevron’s ongoing investment in Egypt’s energy sector. Badawi expressed hope that drilling in the Lotus area will yield positive results, contributing to new discoveries and higher domestic production. The ministry is also pursuing broader plans to offer investment opportunities across various regions, supported by ongoing seismic surveys to identify promising prospects.
