Chevron Seeks to Nullify $744M Coastal Damage Verdict

Chevron is seeking to nullify a $744.6 million verdict handed down by a Plaquemines Parish jury in a coastal damage case.

The lawsuit accuses Chevron's predecessor of dumping billions of gallons of wastewater into Louisiana marshes during decades of oil production, which allegedly caused significant damage.

Chevron argues that the case should be moved to federal court, citing a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found some of the oil production and refining at issue was tied to federal contracts during World War II.

Attorney Paul Clement pointed out that the Supreme Court's decision makes it 'obvious' that the Plaquemines case belongs in federal court.

Louisiana disagrees, stating that the Supreme Court only answered one part of the question and that a federal trial judge should decide the remaining issues before determining whether the case belongs in federal court.
