Chevron Trains Journalists on Oil and Gas Reporting to Promote Accurate Industry Coverage
Chevron Nigeria Limited has underscored the importance of accurate and responsible reporting in the oil and gas industry, which is highly sensitive and complex. The company's Manager, Communications, Dr. Anyaegbudike Victor, made this remark during an Oil and Gas Reporting Workshop organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, in partnership with Chevron.
The workshop aimed to equip journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to report on the oil and gas industry effectively. Dr. Victor emphasized that what journalists say can make or mar the industry, as their reports have far-reaching implications beyond Nigeria's borders due to the global market nature of the industry.
Chevron has been actively training journalists since 2014 through a partnership with Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos. The company has trained over 300 journalists in various locations across the country, including Delta State, Lagos State, and the Federal Capital Territory. In just two years, Chevron's initiative has successfully trained 485 journalists.
Anyaegbudike also highlighted Chevron's commitment to community development through its Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) model, which empowers communities to determine their priorities and prepares five-year development plans. The company provides funding and engages non-governmental organizations for implementation and monitoring. He mentioned that the principles underlying GMoU have been incorporated into the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act.
Chevron's spending on Nigerian content development is approximately $1 billion annually, with a total expenditure of about $10 billion over the past decade. The company has also contributed to the growth and capacity building of indigenous contractors in the Niger Delta. Anyaegbudike reaffirmed Chevron's commitment to Nigeria, stating that the company remains active across various operations, including onshore, shallow-water, offshore, and deep-offshore operations.
