Chevron Weighs LNG Expansion Against Venezuela Bet

Chevron is exploring an expansion of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio, targeting new opportunities in Argentina, Australia, Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean. The company's president of global gas sees potential for growth provided fiscal, regulatory, and capital conditions are favorable.

The LNG market has been shaken by two successive geopolitical shocks: the war in Ukraine cut off Russian gas to Europe, while drone strikes on Qatari LNG exports disrupted operations at the Ras Laffan complex. This has pushed prices higher and prompted Asian buyers to diversify their supply sources.

Chevron already has a foothold in Greece, where it was awarded offshore blocks in partnership with HELLENiQ ENERGY. However, the company's gas diversification strategy must be weighed against its significant financial commitment in Venezuela, which includes an investment of over $7 billion and a target oil production of approximately 600,000 barrels per day by 2031.
