Chevrons on Boeing Jets Trade Fuel Efficiency for Quieter Takeoffs
Boeing's jet engines have undergone a design change to reduce noise near airports. The company has been using serrated engine nozzles, also known as chevrons, on its 787 Dreamliner, 747-8, and 737 MAX models. These nozzles were developed in collaboration with GE Aerospace and NASA.
The chevron design is effective at reducing noise during takeoff and landing, but it has a negative impact on fuel efficiency. According to Boeing, the fixed chevron nozzles introduce a 0.5% thrust loss that persists throughout flight, which affects fuel economy across every phase of operation.
Boeing adopted this design feature widely after securing related patents, making it a signature visual trait for its aircraft. However, as newer aircraft programs prioritize efficiency, the company has phased out the chevron nozzles on some of its models. This compromise highlights how regulatory and public demands can shape engineering choices, even when they carry long-term operational costs for airlines.
Airlines operating these Boeing models face higher fuel expenses due to the permanent aerodynamic drag introduced by the chevrons. While passengers may notice quieter departures, carriers absorb the cost through increased operating budgets or ticket pricing adjustments over time.
