Chevron's Venezuela Oil Expansion Sparks Climate Concerns
Chevron has made a significant announcement regarding its oil production in Venezuela. The company plans to double its production over the next five years, which will have severe consequences for the planet.
According to Paasha Mahdavi, a political science professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Chevron assets in Venezuela are among the most polluting on Earth. He states that the expansion is 'effectively a carbon bomb,' and if produced, will release approximately 52 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
This amount is comparable to the emissions of about 12 million gas-powered cars. The United Nations has warned that global warming has surpassed a critical threshold, making Chevron's decision even more alarming.
