China Considers Allowing Domestic Firms to Buy Nvidia Chip
The Chinese government is considering allowing domestic companies like ByteDance and Alibaba to purchase Nvidia's high-end chip, RTX PRO 5500. According to a report from The Information, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked these companies to report their plans for buying the chip. It appears that some Chinese firms have been informed by the ministry that they intend to approve the purchases.
Industry executives expect Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 chip to avoid US export restrictions. An Nvidia spokesperson stated that US firms are restricted by outdated export controls, which cover gaming products released nearly half a decade ago, and China's own limits on US imports.
