China Considers Allowing Nvidia Chip Sales to Domestic Giants
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has indicated that it may allow domestic companies like ByteDance and Alibaba to purchase Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500 chips, which are used in high-end professional computers.
The ministry recently asked major Chinese tech firms to submit their plans for purchasing the chips, suggesting that authorization is likely. This move comes as a response to China's compute shortage, with domestic suppliers struggling to meet demand.
ByteDance is reportedly targeting one million units of the RTX Pro 5500 chip, driven by local demands that exceed what Huawei and other domestic suppliers can provide. Nvidia plans to ship 500,000 units quarterly in December.
This development is seen as a positive signal for Nvidia amid ongoing US export controls. Analysts believe that this relaxation of measures will help balance China's goal of achieving self-reliance in computing technology.
