China Eases Restrictions on Nvidia Chip Sales to Domestic Tech Giants
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has signaled it may allow domestic tech giants to purchase Nvidia's newly released RTX Pro 5500 graphics card, potentially easing a hardware bottleneck for local AI development.
The move marks a change in strategy from Beijing, which had restricted its largest tech firms from buying certain advanced foreign semiconductors despite relaxed export rules from Washington earlier this year.
According to reports, the government has asked foreign companies including ByteDance and Alibaba Group to outline their desired order volumes and intended applications for the RTX Pro 5500 card. Officials reportedly informed select firms that they intend to approve these acquisitions.
