China Seeks In on US Data Center Boom Amid Geopolitical Hurdles
Chinese companies are eyeing the U.S. data center buildout as an opportunity, despite geopolitical hurdles and public backlash.
The U.S. has more AI data centers than any other country, with 5,427 in 2025, according to the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. China had 449, a significant gap that Chinese manufacturers are looking to bridge.
U.S. tech giants like Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon are estimated to spend around $765 billion combined this year on AI infrastructure, with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon predicting it could hit $1 trillion next year. In contrast, the Chinese government has outlined plans to invest $295 billion to build data centers over the next five years.
Jeffrey Ding, an AI expert and assistant professor at The George Washington University, noted that Chinese companies are not generating as much revenue from their AI services, which is a major reason they can't invest in these enormous data center buildouts.
