China State-Backed Firm Funds Purchase of Restricted Nvidia Chips
A Chinese state-backed firm has disclosed its involvement in a deal to purchase restricted Nvidia chips. Semi-Tech Leasing Group Co., owned by several local government entities, provided capital for Glory View Technology Co. to buy over 700 servers. The funding was for units of Asustek Computer Inc. servers equipped with Nvidia's B300 chips. This suggests state support for an illicit trade that Washington worries is fueling China's AI progress.
The deal has been reported to Beijing regulators and documents show Semi-Tech Leasing Group Co. provided capital for the purchase over the past year. The chips were bought from a separate Chinese company with little public information available.
