China Unveils Domestic AI Chip, Threatening Nvidia's Dominance
Alibaba has unveiled its new AI chip, the Zhenwu V900 accelerator, which delivers roughly three times the performance of its predecessor. The company claims that this new chip will be mass-produced in early 2027 and is part of a larger effort to build out its full-stack computing capabilities. This move highlights the growing importance of domestic AI development in China, where access to US-made chips has been restricted.
The V900 accelerator is designed for use across Alibaba's cloud services, models, and internal applications, giving it a captive workload before it can be sold broadly. This vertical integration could allow Alibaba to capture revenue without relying on outside GPU vendors for incremental units of compute. The company also announced plans to expand its global data-center capacity above 20 gigawatts by 2032.
Nvidia's China problem is becoming structural, as the company faces export restrictions that have reduced its ability to serve high-end demand in the region. While Nvidia still owns a stronger global platform, local customers are being forced to optimize around domestic hardware, turning a temporary supply constraint into permanent ecosystem learning.
