China Weighs Approval for Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 GPUs Amid Regulatory Tensions
Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 GPUs are in focus as China reportedly considers allowing select firms to buy them. According to The Information, ByteDance and Alibaba could seek up to 1 million chips, with shipments expected to begin in late December.
This move comes amid a complex standoff between Nvidia and Chinese regulations. Washington has imposed export restrictions on high-performance AI chips, while Beijing has its own limits on US technology imports. Despite these challenges, industry executives believe the RTX PRO 5500 would fall outside current US export restrictions.
The chip is designed for high-end professional computing and could provide a new option for Chinese companies working with AI workloads. ByteDance alone is considering an order of about 1 million chips, which would take approximately two quarters to fulfill at the rate of 500,000 chips per quarter.
Nvidia's market access remains subject to both US and Chinese restrictions, but any approval could offer a significant opening in China for the company. Retail investors on Stocktwits are cautiously optimistic about the potential impact, with some predicting Nvidia's stock price will reach $300 or more in the near future.
