China's Biotech Industry Gains Momentum in Shanghai
China's biotech industry has been on the rise in recent years, catching the attention of global pharmaceutical companies. The Shanghai Science City has become a hub for Chinese biotechs, with many startups and established companies showcasing their innovative technologies. According to Zhui Chen, co-founder of Abbisko, a $6 billion Shanghai-based biotech, Chinese biotechs have made significant strides in developing new drugs, with some finishing trials in as little as 11 months.
The Jefferies investment bank recently hosted its first Shanghai-based conference, which drew attention from global pharmaceutical companies and venture capital firms. The event highlighted the growing importance of China's biotech industry, with many speakers emphasizing the need for collaboration rather than competition. Local representatives from multinational companies such as GSK, Merck, and Sanofi were present, scouting potential partnerships.
The Chinese government has been actively supporting the development of its biotech industry, with a five-year plan aiming to have at least five blockbuster drugs by 2030. Currently, Chinese drugmakers have only one or two blockbusters, but their share of the global pipeline is growing rapidly, with Morgan Stanley projecting that they will account for 35% of all FDA approvals by 2040.
The rise of China's biotech industry has also raised concerns among US pharmaceutical companies, with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla warning that the US biopharma industry could lose its superiority to Chinese companies within five years. Despite these warnings, many experts believe that the US biotech industry will adapt and continue to thrive.
