Chip Tech Giants TSM and ASML Build Unbreachable Moats
Two chip technology companies have built an unbreachable moat in their industry: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) and ASML. These companies are essential to the production of advanced semiconductor chips, which are crucial for the artificial intelligence market.
TSMC has a reputation for efficiently producing complex products at scale, with clients like Nvidia, Apple, and nearly every AI company that designs chips using its foundry. It accounted for an estimated 72.5% of global chip foundry revenue in the second quarter, making it nearly impossible for competitors to match.
ASML's moat is even wider and deeper, as it builds complicated machines with patents and know-how unmatched by any company or country. These machines are integral to manufacturing semiconductor chips, including extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) machines that etch microscopic circuitry onto chips.
Both stocks have performed well over the years, but their high demand has led to expensive valuations at times. ASML is currently more expensive than TSMC when evaluating its forward price-to-earnings ratio. However, neither stock's valuation is out of line with its average over several years.
