Christodoulides Urges Chevron to Speed Up Aphrodite Gas Field Development
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has urged Chevron to accelerate work on the Aphrodite gas field, saying the project must move decisively from planning to implementation. The President met with Chevron's President of Base Assets and Emerging Countries, Javier La Rosa, in New York, where he stressed the need to maintain momentum and speed up the remaining steps towards a Final Investment Decision (FID). This would clear the way for the field's development and eventual gas production.
Christodoulides described the development of Aphrodite as a strategic priority for Cyprus. The project could strengthen the Eastern Mediterranean's role in European energy planning and energy security, according to Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis. He added that the successful development of Aphrodite would be an important milestone for Cyprus.
The gas field is located in Block 12 of Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone and was discovered in 2011. Cyprus currently estimates the field's best estimate gas in place at 5.6 trillion cubic feet based on its 2023 assessment. The development plan approved by Cyprus provides for a floating production unit, with natural gas transported through a subsea pipeline to Egypt.
