Christy Carlson Romano Reflects on Child Stardom in New Memoir
Christy Carlson Romano, a former Disney Channel star, shares her journey from child stardom to self-discovery in her new memoir, Once Upon a Trainwreck: The Fall and Rise of a Child Star. The book, released in October 2026, reflects on her turbulent upbringing in Hollywood, where she felt adrift despite her success in shows like Even Stevens and Cadet Kelly.
Romano admits she struggled to define her own identity early in her career, often trying to fit into opportunities rather than shaping her own path. She credits social media, particularly her vlogs and podcasts starting in 2019, for helping her redefine her image and find success on her own terms. 'I've been able to create a whole other path of income for my family and myself,' she told USA TODAY.
The actress is vocal about her opposition to child labor in Hollywood, advocating for stricter regulations to protect young performers. She emphasizes the need for social workers on set and individual advocates for each child star, noting that her own childhood was heavily influenced by adult environments in the industry.
Romano also discusses her decision not to push her daughters into the entertainment industry. While she supports their artistic pursuits, she believes in a more measured approach, unlike the intense involvement her own mother had in her career. 'It's a tremendous amount of responsibility to sacrifice your career for your children's career,' she said.
Despite her candid revelations, Romano is excited about her return to acting in the Hallmark Channel film Holiday Ever After: A Disney World Wish Come True, her first major role in seven years. Filming the movie at Walt Disney World felt like 'coming home,' she said, describing the experience as joyful and nostalgic.
