ChromeOS to be Phased Out in 2034 as Googlebook OS Takes Over
Google has announced that it will phase out ChromeOS updates by mid-2034, marking the end of the operating system's 13-year run on Chromebooks. The company confirmed that many newer Chromebooks will be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS, an Android-based operating system introduced alongside its new Googlebook laptops.
The transition to Googlebook OS is expected to begin in 2034, but current devices will continue receiving ChromeOS updates according to their existing Auto Update policy. Devices have a 10-year support lifecycle, so those whose support period extends beyond 2034 will have a direct migration path to Googlebook OS.
Googlebook OS combines ChromeOS and Android, offering native app support, cross-device capabilities, and Gemini-powered productivity features while retaining the security and management features associated with Chromebooks. The company has not yet published a list of eligible Chromebook models or provided details about how the transition will work.
