Google Chrome is the most popular browser globally, but it's also a privacy nightmare. The browser collects a lot of information about its users' browsing habits, including their search history and the websites they visit.

According to court filings and independent studies, Google keeps some details about what Chrome gathers deliberately vague. However, researchers have pieced together a clear picture of the data Chrome collects behind the scenes.

To limit how much data Chrome collects, users can take several steps. Disabling telemetry data in Chrome can help restore some privacy. This can be done by going to Settings > You and Google and looking for Help improve Chrome's features and performance. Toggling it off will restrict at least a portion of the browser's telemetry recording.

Additionally, users can log out of their Google account in Chrome and change the browser's sign-in habits. This can be done by going to Settings > You and Google and selecting the Sign out of Chrome button. Users can also use the drop-down menu on the right to decide what happens when they sign in to other Google services.

Another way to reduce unwanted tracking is to adjust Chrome's settings on web searches. By toggling off Make searches and browsing better, users can prevent some of their search history from being tracked. Users can also turn off Enhanced spell check, which sends typing information to Google, by going to Settings > You and Google.

Using another browser altogether is the ultimate way to stop Google collecting data on users via Chrome. While it may seem daunting, many browsers are based on the Chromium open-source project, making them similar to Chrome in terms of functionality but with some key differences.
