Cisco Introduces Quantum Network Controller and Compiler for Simplified Networking
Cisco has introduced new tools to simplify quantum networking, starting with the Quantum Network Controller. This controller manages the supply side of quantum networks, abstracting underlying hardware to track network topology, optical channels, and quantum resources. It ensures entanglement traffic is allocated efficiently across multipoint deployments, providing a universal interconnect for any vendor’s hardware. The controller cannot inspect quantum traffic directly but verifies link quality statistically and applies predefined tuning or reinitialization when necessary.
Vijoy Pandey, SVP and GM for Outshift by Cisco, described the controller as the "brains" for quantum networking hardware, essential for dealing with the complexity of quantum scale. The controller operates in a multitenant, multi-application environment, guaranteeing intent across many-to-many infrastructures. It is designed to work with hardware from various vendors, not just Cisco’s own devices.
Cisco also unveiled the Network-Aware Quantum Compiler, which works alongside the controller to simplify quantum networking. The compiler acts as a demand-side application, dividing and scheduling quantum algorithms across multiple processors based on real-time network conditions. It treats every application equally, including third-party compilers, and integrates seamlessly with the controller to orchestrate traffic flow.
Both the Quantum Network Controller and the Network-Aware Quantum Compiler are currently research prototypes. Cisco is collaborating with partners on a case-by-case basis rather than shipping these tools at scale.
