Cisco Launches Community-Led Transformation Effort in Johannesburg

Cisco Systems Inc., a global leader in technology innovation, has launched its 40 Communities (40C) Initiative in Johannesburg, South Africa. This new chapter marks a significant milestone for Cisco's community-led transformation efforts globally.

The 40C Initiative aims to engage, support, and invest in 40 communities around the world over 10 years. Building on this vision, Cisco has already seen early successes in existing 40C sites in Western Northern Carolina in the US and Mumbai, India. These partnerships have led to tangible outcomes such as employment opportunities, AI and cybersecurity skills development, home rebuilding, and improved water and waste management.

Cisco's history in South Africa spans three decades, driven by a belief that technology can be a great equalizer. The company has completed 24 projects through its Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program, educating over 600,000 learners in digital skills. This expansion is made possible through meaningful partnerships with government entities, including the Department of Higher Education and Training, South Africa; the State Information Technology Agency; and the National Library of South Africa.

The Masibambisane (let us work together) collaboration between Cisco and Jozi My Jozi will serve as the anchor institution for 40C Johannesburg. This multi-year partnership will focus on four priority workstreams: digital education and skilling, connected safety, smart mobility and transit, and responsible giving, volunteer engagement, and community activation.
