Cisco Stock Plummets 6% Amid Tech Sector Rally
Cisco's stock price took a significant hit on Tuesday, dipping by 6% to around $104.94, while its peers in the tech sector held relatively steady.
The decline in Cisco's share value stands out against the backdrop of a slightly higher overall technology market, as measured by the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) and the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), both of which rose 0.38% and 0.52%, respectively.
The fact that networking peers Arista Networks (ANET) and Ciena (CIEN) remained relatively flat, with only minor fluctuations, suggests that Cisco's decline is more a result of single-name selling rather than any broader concerns about demand for AI networking products.
Cisco's year-to-date gain of 38% provides room for profit-taking, which could be driving the sell-off. However, Piper Sandler's maintained Hold rating and trimmed price target of $125 still sits above current trading levels, indicating that the market may simply be re-pricing Cisco without a fresh catalyst.
