Cleaning Up Your Gmail Inbox: Strategies for Reducing Storage Clutter

One of the biggest storage-hungry areas in Google's cloud services isn't necessarily your photos or files, but rather your emails. A Gmail inbox can take up a significant amount of space, especially if you've been using it for years.

In one user's case, their Gmail inbox was taking up over 5GB of storage, which is slightly more than a third of the free 15GB offered by Google One. To clean up this clutter, several methods can be employed. First, users can start with Google's built-in cleanup tool.

This tool can be accessed by tapping the profile icon in the top-right corner of the Gmail app and selecting 'Clean up space.' Under 'Emails with large attachments,' users can review and delete any unnecessary emails that are taking up a lot of storage. This is especially useful for finding and deleting old emails with attachments.

However, this tool may not catch every email with attachments, so users can also use Gmail's search operators to find and delete these emails manually. By typing 'has:attachment' in the search bar, users can see all emails with attachments, regardless of size. To narrow down the results, users can add a filter for larger attachments or older emails.

Another way to clean up clutter is to use filters to wipe out unwanted emails, such as promotional messages and social notifications. Users can select everything in these categories and delete them all at once.

To maintain a clean inbox going forward, users should also manage their subscriptions and block any senders that are sending unwanted emails. By doing so, they can prevent future clutter from building up.
