Cloud Wars: Oracle Stumbles as Amazon Dominates
When it comes to cloud stocks, Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) are industry leaders. However, their paths to success have been different.
Oracle's backlog initially lifted its stock, but concerns about the security of its future business due to its partnership with OpenAI have cast doubt on that growth. In contrast, Amazon pioneered cloud computing and continues to lead the industry, offering a more complete set of tools for AI workloads.
The market for generative AI is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 40.8% through 2033, according to Grand View Research. Both Oracle and Amazon are well-positioned to benefit from this growth, but one company may benefit more than the other over the next five years.
Oracle's strategy has been to offer database-native AI supported by ultra-fast GPU networking at a lower cost than competitors like Amazon Web Services (AWS). This helped it secure a $300 billion partnership with OpenAI, increasing its backlog to $638 billion. However, industry analysts question whether OpenAI will be able to fulfill its end of the deal due to multibillion-dollar losses and rising competition in the AI space.
Amazon, on the other hand, has built a diverse enterprise with advantages such as a recession-resistant e-commerce business, advertising, and third-party seller services. It also pioneered cloud computing and offers custom silicon specifically tailored to its cloud and AI infrastructure.
