CMA Proposes Search Engine Choice and AI Assistant Options for Android Users
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is pushing for greater search engine choice on Android devices and Chrome browsers. According to a new proposal, users would be given a choice of search providers when they first use their phone or open the browser. This would include AI assistants, such as Google's Gemini, which are increasingly being used as search services.
The CMA has outlined three key recommendations in its proposal: forcing Google and Android manufacturers to provide a choice of search platforms at initial setup, allowing users to choose an AI assistant provided it meets certain technical and security requirements, and requiring all search providers to attribute publisher content when displaying search results.
This move follows measures recommended earlier this year and builds on the CMA's efforts to introduce more competition in the tech industry. The regulator has been working to address concerns around Google's dominance in the market and its impact on users' experience.
