CME Launches Single-Stock Futures Contracts Amid Changing Investor Landscape
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has launched 55 standard and 22 Micro single-stock futures contracts linked to major US companies, including Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla.
This marks a significant milestone for the financial market, but it's not the first time single-stock futures have been introduced in the US. The product was launched in 2002 by OneChicago, but it failed to gain traction and eventually ceased operations in 2020.
CME's version of single-stock futures has changed only slightly from its predecessors, but the intended audience is now vastly different. With the rise of commission-free platforms, phone interfaces, and social media, investors are increasingly comfortable with directional leverage, expiration dates, and margin-backed exposure.
