Coalition Aims to Unlock 100 Gigawatts of Data Center Capacity Through Demand Response
Emerald AI has formed a coalition with major players in the tech and utility industries to tackle the growing demand for data center capacity. The AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) includes Google, Nvidia, Anthropic, AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy. Together, they aim to make demand response a standard part of data center development.
Ayse Coskun, Emerald AI's chief scientist, notes that the technology could reduce but not eliminate the industry's need for new power generation sources as AI compute demand continues rising. This is significant because limiting peak grid usage has been shown to free up capacity nationally.
The coalition argues that allowing data centers to temporarily reduce electricity use during peak periods could enable an additional 100 gigawatts of data center capacity to connect to the grid. Emerald AI's software coordinates directly between utilities and data centers, pausing or shifting noncritical tasks to facilities with available grid capacity.
