The Coca-Cola Company's iconic 'Buy the World a Coke' campaign, launched in 1971, was not just a marketing gimmick. It spawned an actual chart-topping pop song, 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony),' which reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The idea for the jingle and subsequent song came from Coca-Cola advertising executive Bill Backer. While stuck at Shannon Airport in Ireland, he observed people gathering over bottles of Coke, talking and laughing. Inspired by this moment, Backer scribbled down the phrase 'I'd like to buy the world a Coke.' Songwriters Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway, and Billy Davis worked with Backer to turn it into a song.

The song's catchy melody was originally recorded as an ad jingle by The New Seekers. However, the group couldn't appear in the television commercial due to scheduling conflicts, so The Hillside Singers performed the ad on camera instead. The 'Buy the World a Coke' campaign quickly became a sensation, with its image of people from different backgrounds gathering to sing about sharing a Coke resonating with viewers.

The song's popularity led the writers to remove the Coca-Cola references and rework it into a full-length pop song. The Hillside Singers released their version first, followed by The New Seekers' recording, which climbed even higher on the charts.
