Coke Loses Its Luster as Fast Food Chains Flock to Novelty Drinks
Fast food chains in Australia are increasingly leaning into elaborate and brightly colored cold drinks to boost sales, shifting consumer attention from traditional soft drinks like Coke. The trend is driven by social media and collaborations with niche brands, such as Pistachio Papi's recent partnership with Hungry Jack's.
The addition of a vanilla shake and soft-serve dessert topped with pistachio green sauce at Hungry Jack's was met with long queues on the day of launch. This is part of a broader trend where fast-food giants like McDonald's are introducing limited-time offers that can command higher prices than standard drinks.
McDonald's chief marketing officer Annabel Fribence noted that customers are increasingly looking for flavor, adventure, and theatre in their dining experiences. The company's new beverage range includes the Red Bull Dragonberry Energiser, a green and purple concoction with freeze-dried dragon fruit.
The trend has been fueled by influencers who spread the word about niche brands and limited-time offers, driving increased trust for trial among consumers. As a result, fast-food chains are churning out gimmicky drinks that can be priced at a premium without significant additional production costs.
