Colossus 2 Set to Surpass 1 Million Processors, Raises Red Flags on Infrastructure

SpaceXAI's Colossus 2 is rapidly expanding its computing power. Elon Musk announced that it currently runs 110,000 GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300 processors from Nvidia Corp.

The next phase of expansion will see another 220,000 GB300s become operational next week and another 220,000 in November. If the schedule holds, Colossus 2 could reach over 1.2 million Nvidia GB200 and GB300 chips by year-end.

This would make it one of the largest AI computing centers in the world. Musk highlighted that the expansion is not without its challenges, citing networking constraints as a major bottleneck. The current increment of 110,000-chip additions reflects the number of fiber optic cables that can be plugged into a central switch.

Colossus 2's massive growth has also led to concerns about power and cooling infrastructure. Musk has previously stated that large AI data centers require significant resources, including power plants, transformers, liquid-cooling loops, and complex networking.
