Comac C919 Takes to Skies on First International Flight

China is marking a major milestone in its ambitious aviation project as the Comac C919, a passenger jet developed by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), prepares for its first international flight. The plane will depart from Beijing Capital International Airport at 3 p.m. and land in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital, just over two hours later.

The C919 is a narrow-body jet roughly comparable to the Boeing 737 and has been flying domestic routes for Chinese carriers since 2023. However, this flight marks its first time operating on an international commercial route, with analysts cautioning that it could take generations before a Chinese-built aircraft meaningfully challenges the dominance of Boeing and Airbus.

Scott Kennedy, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, described the flight as a 'public relations move,' noting that Ulaanbaatar was likely chosen for its proximity to Beijing. He emphasized that the C919 arrived years behind schedule and relies heavily on Western-made components, remaining less efficient than its Boeing and Airbus counterparts.

China has been working towards building its own commercial jet for years, with Li Jiaxiang, then head of the country's civil aviation authority, declaring in 2015 that a great nation must have its own large commercial aircraft. Progress has remained slow despite advancements in other high-tech sectors like robotics and electric vehicles.

A 2020 analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that over half of the C919's suppliers were based in the United States, highlighting the complex global supply chain involved in aircraft manufacturing.
