Comac Completes Maiden Test Flight of High-Altitude C919 Variant
China's Commercial Aircraft Corporation (Comac) has taken a significant step towards challenging Boeing and Airbus in the global aviation market. The company's high-altitude variant of its C919 narrowbody jet completed its maiden test flight at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, marking a major milestone in the development of this specialized aircraft.
The high-altitude variant, derived from the standard C919 platform, features a shortened fuselage and enhanced systems designed for operations in high-altitude regions. This modification enables the plane to perform well in areas with thin air, such as western China's high-plateau airports.
Comac signed a framework agreement with Tibet Airlines in 2023 to develop the high-altitude model, followed by a deal for 40 C919 high-altitude variants a year later. The introduction of this variant is expected to address surging demand for travel in western China and alleviate capacity bottlenecks on high-plateau routes.
Tian Linchuan, a research fellow at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, noted that a mature commercial aircraft platform should be able to spawn a family of derivatives. By complementing the baseline C919 with a dedicated high-altitude variant, Comac's fleet is now poised to serve various elevations and meet the growing demand for air travel in China.
