COMAC Takes Flight: China's C919 Aims to Challenge Aviation Duopoly
China's state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) took a significant step towards becoming a major player in the global aviation market as its C919 passenger jet made its first international commercial flight.
The Air China-operated C919 departed from Beijing Capital International Airport bound for Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on Wednesday, marking a milestone in Beijing's push to develop an alternative to Boeing and Airbus.
While COMAC has built up a substantial order backlog mainly from Chinese airlines and leasing companies, delivering only 15 C919 aircraft last year, well below the targeted 75, it is still reliant on foreign components and lacks certification from major U.S. or European aviation regulators.
